The brown recluse spider is found in and around homes in Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and a few other places, including right here in Frankfort. These spiders have not spread past this area due to its preference for mild winters and warm summers. Fatalities from brown recluse bites are rare, but have certainly occurred, and so do a host of other negative side effects. Doctors have a hard time identifying the bite of the brown recluse upon initial inspection, but if untreated, the slow-moving venom can eat away at the flesh surrounding the bite. Brown recluse spiders have acclimated to living among humans and will oftentimes take residence inside of homes or other structures. You could find them lurking in closets, garages, utility rooms or any other dark and rarely-frequented place in or near your home. To prevent a bite from one of these spiders, always give your clothes a shake before putting them on, and follow the same preventive measure with towels and bed linens. Also use caution when handling firewood, rocks or cardboard boxes, as these are also some of the favorite homes of this dangerous pest.
